I tried to track my day for a future post about “day in the life” and by 10:50, I had fully forgotten I had even started. I don’t even start groups until Monday 🙂 Part of the distraction was my husband came and ate lunch with me and one of my students today. This was the first time he ever spent more than 10 minutes in my classroom… the joys of having a husband who works in business.. and the reality that I haven’t taken a lunch in two years.
In the middle of the conversation, my student stood up, dramatically pointed at me and says to my husband, “DO YOU KNOW HOW WEIRD SHE IS? SHE’S THE CRINGIEST!” He responded with, “of course… I live with her!” and her crackly high-pitched laugh filled the room.
A couple weird things I do on a daily basis: awkwardly dance down the hall while walking my kids back to class, sing when I am redirecting them, break out in accent, randomly bring Uranus into the conversation, and make weird “if I don’t keep my word, I will…. (lick the bathroom stall, throw a water-balloon at our principal, let you eat lunch in our classroom for an entire month)…
Truthfully, I have no idea why I do some (ALL) of these things… but I have pretty strong relationships with almost all of the “challenging” students at our school. Having the relationships fosters an environment and community where students feel capable in reaching the high expectations that have been set.
Maybe the secret for relationship breakthroughs + classroom management is to channel your inner 6 year old self with a slight sprinkle of Lizzie McGuire’s cartoon conscious… If you’re starting to feel like behavior is out of control or you just aren’t connecting with some kids.. be brave, vulnerable, and do something weird!
Step outside the norm of what teachers are suppose to be like and be the type of teacher you would want to learn from. I can only speak for myself, but I would much rather listen to a wannabe-but-not-even-close comedian than a compliance officer… I’m just saying’ doing something strange and see what happens 🙂 and if you’re admin just happen to walk in… either engage them in the weirdness or type an e-mail later that says, “hey… whatever it takes, right?” 🙂
