I’m a firm believer that when we don’t yet have the tools we need, we are often given aching situations (opportunities) to force us into developing them.
Right now the skill i’m working on developing is patience. I know that might come as a surprise a special education teacher needs to work on patience… but the whole concept of patience is definitely a misconception about special education teachers.
With kids, I am empathetic, compassionate, and understanding. Those three characteristics look like patience but they are far from it. The tool of patience I’m working on developing is the “calming waiting for other people to realize our truth and to act with support, love, and grace.”
When people don’t hear me, or people I care about, or act on what we need, I turn into this dark ninja warrior. For my own sanity, I need to develop true patience and give more time before I start showing my power ranger ninja moves and air punches to the walls of my classroom.
Sometimes I think we feel we have to know it all and have it all figured out. We 100% don’t. I’m still adding tools to my toolbox every day. What’s one tool you’re working on adding to your toolbox? It’s hard but worth it!

Not picture: me giving a gentle reminder to a student who loves to run every where, to walk down the hall. I popped my head out to see if he was walking and he wasn’t… I watched him run, trip over his feet, and fall on his face… His face was priceless when he saw me staring at him… my response? “That is why we walk…”
