I am a firm believer that in order for us to show up for kids each and every day in the way we need to, we have to understand who we are at people.
I’ve sat through so many meetings where the concept of developing a students self-awareness was center of the conversation. Are we even self-aware? Sometimes the skills I’m asked to teach or know I need to teach require me to dig deep. “He just doesn’t have empathy…” EMPAHY? How on earth do you teach that? Empathy and self-awareness are the two i’ve struggled with the most. The more I learn, the more I realize they go hand-in-hand.
At a PD last year, I went through a process to identify 3 of my core values. I came across the notes from the PD in an old notebook the other day it got me thinking: do I teach through the lens of my core values? The answer is up for debate, but being able to name the values I hold nearest and dearest to my heart is a strong starting point.
“He just doesn’t listen…” “He refuses to do classwork…” “She just sits there…” “She’s preventing the rest of the class from learning…” “He just doesn’t care…”
If it appears they don’t value school, yet, what do you think your kiddos who resemble these phrases value? The only way to find out is to ask them… but for it to make sense, you have to ask yourself first.
My 3 core values are: growth, kindness, and perseverance… What are yours?
