In a time where there has been so much change and uncertainty, I think we can all agree that relationships, especially teacher relationships, are more important than ever. Although I’m teaching in a new school district, in a new building, and in a new program, I feel like it doesn’t necessarily count because I went to school there. Before realizing where this journey was going to take me, I spent a lot of time looking into school districts and feeling a lot of nerves around starting somewhere new.
Sometimes it’s the small things that go a long ways. When signing my contract, I was given a small welcome gift for being hired in the district– a to-go coffee mug with my districts information on it. Even though I’ve already felt at home here, because well, it is my home, it still meant a lot. It got me thinking about ways I can help new staff feel welcomed in the future; ways to set the tone for inclusion and community for new staff. While gift giving isn’t my love language, I do love giving gifts. If you’re looking for thoughtful ways to welcome new staff, student teachers, or educators that sometimes get forgotten at the beginning of the year, I’ve been brainstorming some ideas for us <3
School or team gear
all schools operate differently. If there is an easy way to purchase and have school gear or gimmicks available, this would be the perfect gift. Depending on the situation, it could even be something grade level specific or specific to their role. I love these different ideas from etsy!
A welcome card or note
with your contact information on it in case they have any questions or need any support š I know we’re all really busy, especially during back-to-school time but when you’re new, sometimes our time and relationship building initiative is the most valuable resource we can gift someone. Something local
Especially if they are new to the community, sharing something local with them is thoughtful and extra welcoming. Given, this might be a bit more difficult because of allergy restrictions and knowing them, but if you have a favorite local thing, sharing that experience with someone new can make a huge difference. For me, I would go to a local chocolate shop and get a small box of chocolates or a cute notebook made by a local artist.
A Universal gift card
How cute are these gift cards from Vanilla Gift? c/o As much as I wish I could recommend target or Starbucks, to be honest, not all places have those stores. Where I live… I don’t. The thing I love about VISA gift cards is they can be used anywhere visa is accepted. Who knows what people’s favorite stores are. Some stores are safe bets but.. the ability to choose is always super considerate and allows people to get what they truly need (or treat themselves after a long back-to-school seasons).
What other ideas can we add to the list? These them in the comments section š
