On Friday, I summoned my inner Texan to teach each group with a southern accent. One of my sweet little second graders said, “Mrs. Boston, why do you hide your accent? You sound like summer!” My sweet little one, I do not actually have a southern accent…. I wish I did!
My brain is having a hard time focus on what to share because so many different things happened last week. Moments of empowerment, confusion, lots of joy, reality checks, deep breaths, closing my eyes and pretending I was on deserted island with a fully stocked Target… you know, the average week in a teachers life.
I found the most joy during the week in the moments I spent with my colleagues. With a never ending to-do list, I usually find myself only working when I’m at work. I’m in the zone from the moment I arrive until I leave. I’m trying to find balance this year which is a slow and steady process. Every day I’ve set a goal to go into some one else’s classroom during non-student time… just to chat and see how they are doing. 5 minutes a day… 5 minutes I’m not writing an IEP or looking at data.
The result? I feel like my resiliency is already increasing. I don’t really know why but I feel like it has something to do with balance and community. I’m going to continue this week. If you feel like your resiliency window is starting to decrease… try it out! Take 5 minutes and go build or streghthen a relationship with a colleague. Community and culture is so important and it’s something we don’t spend enough time on.
Teacher reminder– you are amazing… and it’s Monday… and it might be hectic… but you are a brave warrior of love and learning and you are going to KICK BUTT THIS WEEK! Off to work I go!
