I keep trying to start my post with talking about the first week of school with my actual students… but in my reality the best part of this entire week came at 3:55 PM on Friday when one of my SIXTH graders came walking in. The week couldn’t have ended any better.
My heart kept telling me my 5th graders were ready to take on middle school, but my brain would chime in otherwise. My crew was indescribable and irreplaceable. When my once refusal of any work completer, i’m going to try to get you fired every day of school writer, and my “I hate school” screamer came smiling this afternoon, I could feel middle school was off to a great start.
I sent 11 kiddos to our feeder middle school. 11 kiddos who hated each other for years… who ended up being my saving grace and becoming a little family. He filled me in on each and every one of them. The entire time I was holding back happy tears. The best part was when he said, “(student’s name) asked why him and (his best friend who was also on our team) don’t have any classes together… Mrs. (teachers name) said… ‘Thank Mrs. Boston for that one! She said she was giving you guys a chance!'” I started cracking up.
No joke, I gave two of my kids the ENTIRE year for me to decide if they could handle having classes together in middle school. I asked for 3 things: walking down the hall, going straight to whatever location they were headed (they would often ditch and hide in the bathrooms), and complete work in their fifth grade classroom. They clearly didn’t know how serious I was about it… although I always kept my word to them. I asked the student telling me this story if (student name) got upset and he said, “really? Just for running down the halls!!!” Don’t worry… it’s an incentive to earn a class with his bestie at the semester.
One of the hardest things about my job is working with kids who don’t trust people. Not just teachers, but any living, breathing person. It makes my word that more powerful and that more important. I have to practice intense amounts of self-regulation in times of frustration to make sure I don’t say something that I don’t mean but have to keep. Most importantly, I do this so when I tell them how strong they are, resilient they are, and brave they are… they know it’s true.
