My fifth graders at their first set of middle school presenters speak in their classrooms. I didn’t think much of it until the end of the day when one of them walked in with tears and said, “you’re not going to be my teacher next year.” Thanks to mirror neurons, 6 others joined in the fun.
Being the “can I eat lunch with you?” pushover that I am, we had a team lunch where I was drilled with middle school questions. “Do I have to have 7 different teachers? What if I’m upset, where do I go? Are 8th graders really big? Can I take my IEP with me?”
My principal doesn’t always walk into my classroom but when he does, he’s bombarded with a million questions. “Can you ask your boss to add 6th grade to our school?” He gave them the perfect explanation and shared that he use to teach middle school. When he left, I explained that I had only taught middle school before coming to LH… and the reason I’m so weird is because I taught middle school. I saw a slight glimpse of hope in their eyes. 5th grade teachers– how do you help prepare your little ones for middle school? Having taught sixth grade, I know how to prepare them academically, but socially and emotionally, I’m clueless.

Featured Teacher Staple: These hot pink sandal heels were a HIT with the kindergartners on Tuesday. They were so comfortable to walk in all day. I love that they come in multiple colors and bring the perfect little pop of brightness into the day!

Featured Teacher Staple: I am constantly wearing my jean jacket (and sharing how much I love it) but I truly believe one should be in every persons closet. The last 3 jean jackets I’ve loved have all been purchased at Target.

Featured Teacher Staple: When you find a sturdy pair of tights, it makes sense to buy 5 additional pairs! Right? I love wearing dresses and miss all of mine during the winter. I’ve had awful luck with tights in the past. These target tights are AMAZING and worth every penny.

Featured Teacher Staple: This stylish gold lanyard was one of my favorite Christmas gifts. I shared it in my teacher guide series and am so happy my husband actually reads my blog. I don’t hate wearing my badge anymore! The lanyard is lightweight, looks great with everything, and has functionality for any id clip.

Last week I shared four activities that my students wanted to do more of. I successfully added in one of the activities a day and I definitely saw their engagement increase. I can’t wait to incorporate more of my students voices into the decision making process 🙂 Have a wonderful three day weekend!
