One of the biggest take aways of last week was the importance of having another human in your life who stands by you or sits next to you or is just simply there in the background of your life when the tribulations of life hit, who doesn’t even need to say it, but embodies the “I got you no matter what” type of love for you. It’s crazy that at the age of 30, that person for me is one of my former teachers. Sometimes we don’t realize who that person is until every thing hits the fan, but when we’re given the opportunity to grow and reflect, and can identify a person like that… a persons world can truly become bright.
I just left a district where advocating was seen as defiance, where doing the right thing comes at a cost, where it’s better to stay silent about the things that matter to you and your students, and where there is no match for the money, power, and politics engrained and maintained in their “facebook perfect* system. I believed so deeply that love would win in my situation and it didn’t win that battle, and many of the battles, but in the end love is still winning.
Every time we fall down and get back up, love wins. It’s easy to be defeated by the realities of our profession and the constant struggle, hardships, and adversities, that to be honest… simple human decency for ourselves and each other could probably fix. Now, i’m not sayin that we should keep falling and falling until we can get back up any more… because trust me, I almost couldn’t get back up… but that’s where the power of having that “I got you no matter what” person in your life. We don’t all have one, so maybe we need to be one… for each other and our students. We can do it through technology, in one guest teaching experience, in our classrooms, through social media, and especially within our communities.
I challenge you to write a note to that person for you.. or tell one of your students that you got them no matter what. Sometimes that sense of love and safety can make all the difference. I’ll be giving my note to my teacher tomorrow 🙂
On a very different note… I’m clearly obsessing over neutrals lol… not sure if it’s just because my spring boxes are over town in a storage unit or what ;)… or if neutrals are in this spring. Definitely an honest balance of both, ha!
